As per Graham,
Upon analysis’ provides safety of principal and an adequate return
The key here is analysis. You need to imagine buying stocks like you are buying a house: you will analyze the location, neighbors, costs, etc. The same should be done for stocks. Since you are not trading, like when you buy an house you plan to stay.
In this regard, investment is different from speculating, even though speculation is inherent to common stock commitments. What you need to achieve is keeping it controlled by avoiding:
- speculating when you think you are investing
- speculating seriously instead of a past-time
- risking more money that you can afford to lose If you really want to speculate, put aside a portion dedicated to it and never put more money.
